Solo Exhibition: “As much to tomorrow as to the past. THE END.” Michael Reid Gallery, Berlin

I started 2019 with a solo exhibition at Michael Reid Berlin, here are some photos of the works, the opening, and the show.

You can read an interview I did for Another Magazine discussing the work.

Lucy Dyson: As much to tomorrow as to the past. THE END

18 Jan – 23 Feb 2019

A respected artist, animator and music video director, we are thrilled to present Lucy Dyson’s first exhibition at Michael Reid Berlin, the opening of our 2019 program.

Lucy’s collages have been commissioned for numerous album covers, and to date, she has directed and produced over fifty music videos for clients including Beyoncé (Formation Tour Visuals), Gotye, Ray LaMontange, Courtney Barnett, Sarah Blasko, Paul Kelly and many others.

As much to tomorrow as to the past. THE END is a kaleidoscopic, humorous and psychedelic, exploration of a fictional future drawing upon material from the past. Lucy’s love for vintage print thus weaves together colour, pattern and image to create a visually compelling imagining of what is to come.

Album Artwork: PAUL KELLY – Nature

I created the album artwork for “Nature”, the 24th studio album by Australian musician Paul Kelly.

The artwork was nominated for Best Cover Art in the 2019 ARIA Music Awards.

The cover art is taken from a scene from the animated Sonnet 18 music video I made for Paul, it was my visual interpretation of the Shakespeare lines:

“And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course, untrimm’d;

I will update with a full pack shot and some of the merchandise the artwork also graced. It’s always great working with PK!

Solo Exhibition: Australian Embassy Berlin 2018

In March 2018 I held a solo exhibition at the Australian Embassy in Berlin, the work spanned my art practise since first moving to Berlin in 2011, it also included a three channel video installation of my animations.

The opening reception was held on International Women’s Day and was opened by Dr Lauren Bain, Deputy Head Of Mission.

From the Australian Embassy Berlin:

Passend zum Internationalen Weltfrauentag eröffnen wir heute unsere neue Ausstellung mit fantastischen Bildern und Animationen der international ausgezeichneten australischen Künstlerin Lucy Dyson. Noch bis Ende April könnt ihr die Ausstellung bei uns in der Botschaft anschauen. #IWD2018

Many thanks to the wonderful and supportive embassy staff, especially Susanne Kalbantner and Julia Kaute

Animation Installation: Ableton LOOP 2017 – Funkhaus Berlin

I created an installation version of my experimental animation “The History and Future of Listening” as part of Ableton’s Loop Summit at Funkhaus Berlin.

The animation was displayed across three walls in Foyer A, the main thoroughfare for attendees en route to see presentations by Goldie, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and many others.

Thanks to Abelton producer Craig Schufton for the opportunity and the programme write-up. 😎 🚀🎶👂

Music Video: Cookin’ on 3 Burners feat. Emmi – Real Life Baby

Here’s my music video for “Real Life Baby” by Cookin’ on 3 Burners feat. Emmi. The video premiered on Rolling Stone Australia🐌 ❤️🐌 🎶🐌 👉When my sister Marita and I were young girls we formed a snail club, I was thinking about this while I was making this animation, along with that summer feeling of share-house parties and not being bothered by the aftermath because everyone had such a good time…even the snails 🐌 ❤️🐌 🎶🐌 😄

Music Video: The Orbweavers – Radium Girls

The Orbweavers wrote this beautiful and haunting song about the Radium Girls, and I created this animation for it. Radium Girls is from The Orbweaver’s second album Deep Leads, out on Mistletone Records.

To quote from The Orbweavers’ facebook page: “Today we release the video for Radium Girls, directed and created by Marita’s sister Lucy Dyson, artist, animator and music video director based in Berlin. We told her the story of girls working in the radium dial painting factories, and she came up with this moving response.”

Music Video: Les Hommes – Queen Fez

Here is an animation I recently made for London based jazz exotica trio Les Hommes.

“Queen Fez” was nominated in the “Best Experimental” category of the 2017 Berlin Music Video Awards.

Rory More of Les Hommes describes the song as “a heady dose of gritty oganatronic mondorama with touches of Shearing-meets-Monk on a pub piano.” The song was recorded live at Bark Studio and will be available from April 7th on their new LP “The Sinner”

I really loved creating this weird-world eggimation, especially the pool party and keyboard scallop scenes…and the mini golf egghead scene, and the flippity-floppity fish dish…it has it all. Thanks for the inspiration Queen Fez and Les Hommes!
