Check it out! I made the art work for Gemma Ray’s new album Island Fire, it’s out on Bronzerat Records on 12″ clear vinyl (and CD too), and it’s an amazing record. Gemma performed at the excellent record store Mr Dead & Mrs Free in Berlin on Record Store Day last Sturday, the place was so packed I couldn’t even squeeze in to see her play, and the store remained super crowded for a while afterwards as everyone lined up to get their copies of the album signed. I have really loved working with Gemma and I hope to collaborate with her again. She’s off to the US in May to play some shows with Ane Brun, so go and see her! Here’s the artwork:

“Phlebotinum is a word used by screenwriters and authors to describe any inexplicable scientific or mystical force that arises or is applied to a story in order to propel the plot forward without unnecessary fuss. It is a flux capacitor, a door that shuts in Paris and opens in New York, an underwater super-submarine. The idea of phlebotinum isn’t so different from the crossed wires of a dream, those strange and perhaps subtle conveniences that belie reality.

Without being to didactic, this exhibition proposes a practical application of this narrative device through art making. Paintings, sculpture and collage act as both a commentary on the idea, as well as a realization of it. Do not touch the artwork, lest you end up back in twenty thousand leagues in the future with mutant dinosaur babies to wrestle.”
