Solo Exhibition: “As much to tomorrow as to the past. THE END.” Michael Reid Gallery, Berlin

I started 2019 with a solo exhibition at Michael Reid Berlin, here are some photos of the works, the opening, and the show.

You can read an interview I did for Another Magazine discussing the work.

Lucy Dyson: As much to tomorrow as to the past. THE END

18 Jan – 23 Feb 2019

A respected artist, animator and music video director, we are thrilled to present Lucy Dyson’s first exhibition at Michael Reid Berlin, the opening of our 2019 program.

Lucy’s collages have been commissioned for numerous album covers, and to date, she has directed and produced over fifty music videos for clients including Beyoncé (Formation Tour Visuals), Gotye, Ray LaMontange, Courtney Barnett, Sarah Blasko, Paul Kelly and many others.

As much to tomorrow as to the past. THE END is a kaleidoscopic, humorous and psychedelic, exploration of a fictional future drawing upon material from the past. Lucy’s love for vintage print thus weaves together colour, pattern and image to create a visually compelling imagining of what is to come.

Animation: HERMÉS – Le Temps Hermés

🇫🇷 LE TEMPS HERMÈS⌚️

http://time.hermes.com/

I collaborate with Hermés Paris on the 2018 campaign “Time, a Hermés object”.

I was asked to create two short animations exploring the playful concept of “Hermés time” in Honolulu, one evoking daytime and the other nighttime.

For the day animation I experimented with footage I photographed of my sister, collaging her into a surreal beach world where jellyfish float through the sky.

The moon is the main star in the night animation, diving into a psychedelic neon coral reef before bouncing back into the star-fish speckled night sky.

Animation: PAUL SMITH – AW18 “Dreamer” print

Here’s a short animation I created for Paul Smith, in which he discusses the influences and inspirations behind the “Dreamer” print in the AW18 collection.

✨🐸🌳🐌✨

Paul Smith is a wonderful designer and person and this was an incredibly cool commission, produced by Mark Fountain, with audio by Jamie Dodd.

“Drift away into a colourful dream world as Paul explains the influences and inspirations behind the autumn winter ‘18 ‘Dreamer’ print.”

VOGUE Deutsch: Gender Revolution

I recently had the pleasure of working with and being profiled on VOGUE Germany, alongside some brilliant Berlin women for this excellent project.

Screen Shot 2017-06-15 at 15.47.08

Gender Revolution” features videos and interviews with the wonderful Laetitia Duveau of Curated by GIRLS, Lyra Pramuk, Hengameh Yaghoobifarah, and Eylül Aslan.

I created a collage-animation GIF for each woman profiled, using portrait photographs by Eylül Aslan and footage from the videos. The GIFs featured on Vogue Germany’s website, instagram and facebook page.

Many thanks to Vogue Germany, Nike Germany and Glutamat Kommunikation.

Beyoncé Formation World Tour

I was commissioned to create animated content for Beyoncé’s Formation World Tour. My work screened on the 20 x 20 metre video monolith during the performance of her song Countdown, the animation was a collage of footage from her music videos and Lemonade visual album content.

Photo from beyonce.com, posted on April 30, 2016. The Formation World Tour, Tampa.

For the first month of the tour the animation filled the entire screen, I then created revisions turning the animation into a moving border, framing the live footage of her on stage projected back onto the monolith. I attended the concert in Frankfurt am Main, it was incredible and completely surreal to see my work displayed at this scale, and Queen Bey performing in front of it.

Here are some photos of my work from the very first concert of the tour taken by Bryan Kwak, Apr 27, 2016, Marlins Park, Miami, Florida.

Music Video: PAUL KELLY – And Death Shall Have No Dominion

Directing and animating the music video for Paul Kelly’s version of the Dylan Thomas poem “And Death Shall Have No Dominion” was really wonderful. Thank you Paul Kelly and thank you Dylan Thomas. 💀🐍🍂🌱🌓✨

From @paulkellyofficial “AND DEATH SHALL HAVE NO DOMINION video is out now, and true to the style of Director, @lucydysonsphere full of wonder and humour. You’ll have seen Dyson’s work across a few of Paul’s records. Anyone remember the last video she made for us? Team PK”

Album Artwork: PAUL KELLY – Nature

I created the album artwork for “Nature”, the 24th studio album by Australian musician Paul Kelly.

The artwork was nominated for Best Cover Art in the 2019 ARIA Music Awards.

The cover art is taken from a scene from the animated Sonnet 18 music video I made for Paul, it was my visual interpretation of the Shakespeare lines:

“And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course, untrimm’d;

I will update with a full pack shot and some of the merchandise the artwork also graced. It’s always great working with PK!

Music Video: XYLOURIS WHITE – Only Love

Xylouris White is a collaboration between Greek singer and laouto player George Xylouris and Australian drummer Jim White, best known for his work with Dirty Three. The duo’s music has been described as combining “free-jazz, avant-rock and ages-old Greek folk traditions.”

This animation was created using a combination of footage I shot on my iPhone and an old Lumix camera in Greece, some press shots from the band, and a collection of tour snaps taken by George and Jim.

The track was produced by Guy Picciotto from Fugazi, so I put him in the animation also (care of one of the aforementioned tour snapshots)

The video for Only Love premiered at relix.com and was the lead single off Xylouris White’s second album “Mother” released on Bella Union and ABC Music in Australia. 🐐🐐🙌🐐🐐
